The Lady Raiders currently hold a record of 9-5 going into Friday night’s game against Holliday. Next Tuesday they will play one more home volleyball game against Decatur before opening district the following Friday.
The Rider Chronicle sat down with second-year coach Julie Yandell to discuss her thoughts on the season so far and expectations for the future of the team.
Q: How do you feel the season’s gone so far?
A: I am excited about how we’ve played so far this season. We have faced some tough competition and we haven’t stopped fighting. We still have work to do, but we are starting to believe in our capabilities, and coming together as a team, and I think this season will be great.
Q: What are your expectations for the rest of this season?
A: My expectation for the season is to go all-out and give it our best. There is no next season for us… this is it. Our motto this season is to “play it like dessert.” This means that just how you might savor every bite of your favorite dessert, we have to savor and enjoy every second of the season. Take every opportunity, every chance and don’t rush. Don’t say, “Well, I will just worry about it later.” Nope, take charge now. Make every moment count.
Q: Who are some of your key returning players this year?
A: Pretty much all of my returners are key players this year. Sophia Curry and Kensley Oliver are our amazing setters. We look to Madi Bobbitt and Taegen Ward to dominate on the outside. Emily Music has been a key point scorer for us and is a fun one to watch on the right side. Laney Nguyen has a great block, and it’s been fun watching her take charge in the middle. Carly Ayers is leading our defense on the back row and is a great libero.
Q: Are there any new players to keep an eye on?
A: Sophomore Jaydah Smith is powerful with her left-handed swing. Shelby Davis has been crucial as a true utility player. Junior Mackenzie Hughes has a strong presence in the middle, and I am excited to watch her be a dominant blocker this season.
Q: Are you doing anything to honor the last year of Rider volleyball?
A: We hosted the first and only alumni game. That was a lot of fun. We are also honoring alumni throughout the season by recognizing players and coaches throughout Rider’s history. The best way we can honor this program is by playing for everyone who has ever worn an LRV jersey. The program is strong because of those who have led and played before us, and we honor them by taking the game seriously and giving it our best.
