The Rider-Old High rivalry is a long-standing tradition that dates back to the 1960s. With both schools closing at the end of this year, this is the last chance for each to showcase themselves in one of the most elaborate celebrations of school pride in the state.
A major part of this celebration every year is themed dress-up days. Students are highly encouraged to participate in these next week.
Monday: Superhero Day
Tuesday: Night In vs. Night Out
Wednesday: Barbie and Ken
Thursday: Rhyme without Reason
Friday: Mum Day (wear black and gold!)
No rivalry week would be complete without the Happening. Various organizations and teams decorate floats and parade around the school on Thursday before the big game. The parade is expected to start at 8:30 p.m.
At the end of the parade the crowd of students, staff, parents and alumni gather in the field house.
Lit only by candles and phone flashlights, they listen as speeches are given, the alma mater is sung and chants are recited.
The enthusiasm from The Happening bubbles over and grows larger throughout Mum Day. The school is in complete silence all day until the victory bell is finally rang at the afternoon pep rally.
Then it’s time for the main event – the game. This year Rider students, staff members, and supporters from various generations will gather together one last time to experience the rush and excitement of this highly anticipated game, which will kick off at 8 p.m.
