Main Hall Traffic Jam Easily Fixed

by Ryder Smith

Lately, the main stairwell has been the place to be during passing
periods. Friends having a conversation on the staircase. A friend
on one side of the stairwell yelling across to another. Not to mention, the daily congestion of students waiting to get to their classes.

Staircases are not meant for people to stop and talk while other
people are all around them. Would you stop your car in the middle
of traffic on Kemp and Callfield to talk to someone in another car?
It’s possible, but cars would probably not be intact after that. It’s the same thing for the stairwell. Stopping causes annoyance to those
trying to get to classes on time. Also, it may not seem like it, but
it is a safety issue. If you are not moving on the stairwell there is a bigger possibility of injuries and more commotion.

There are five stairwells in this school. All of them are available
for use and not as many students use them as much as the main
stairwell. Also, the passing period is four minutes long, almost 45
seconds of that passing period is spent waiting for people to actually
move through the main stairwell to get into the next hallway.
It is the students’ job to get to class, not to wait until they are done talking to a friend.
Teachers, please help. If you see students standing around on
stairs and in the middle of the hallway, tell them to keep moving.
Students, it is understandable to want to talk to friends while class
is not going on, but choose another time and place to do this, not
in the most populated areas of school where other students are
trying to make it to class on time.
