The Walking Dead began its third season with the 20th episode in the series “Seed,” and it kicked the season off fast. The episode was great standing alone and as a season premiere with its action, drama, humor, and, of course, a twist.
As a fan of the comics and the show, I found plenty of highlights. First off the characters have developed since season two. This group is held together simply by the will to survive in this world of the dead, and the way they interact in dialogue and fighting, you can easily see the bonds they’ve made with one another.
There are also a few characters that were introduced this episode such as Michonne and The Prisoners, all characters from the comics and wonderfully adapted into the show, which makes me very excited to see what they do with The Governor.
Then there’s the setting: The Prison, a pinnacle location.
I’ve been waiting for the survivors to find their way there, and now that they have, I’m wondering what the writers of the show will put the characters through and if it gets as dark as I hope it will be.
If there’s one thing that’s needed in a zombie apocalypse, it’s zombies, and did this premiere have plenty to offer. Unlike the previous season, the undead are continuously around the survivors, and the survivors have some awesome ideas how to fight them, leading to the feeling you’re watching something with a Romero feel.
You also have to admire the creators’ creativity when it comes to developing some of these zombies, like putting some of the walkers in riot gear, making it a challenge for the group to take down.
Even though this is a serious show, there are always those slow scenes to help keep calm between the storms. Some character interactions were pretty funny, while others led to questions about the stability of relationships. Those questions bring the characters down to earth, which is what makes The Walking Dead so great.
I have read every issue of the comics and this show still throws me for a loop at times, and this episode did just that, so prepare for an interesting twist.
The only problem I had with this episode is that you find some of the character development in contradiction to past events and there’s a slow scene that wasn’t really needed, but both are slightly redeemed by the haunting realities for these people that are brought up.
All in all The Walking Dead season three premiere was great fun to watch. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and left with a great ending that made me want more. I will definitely continue watching to see the world of The Walking Dead unfold and become “the” zombie story I know and love.
