There he sits, in the 3rd row, two seats back and in front of him is his crush. He’s liked her since middle school. He notice she’s wearing a dark blue razorback tank. Her bare shoulders glistening under the fluorescent lights. He want to kiss the freckle on her left shoulder.
Psh, yeah right! Has anyone ever really caught a boy staring at their shoulders all dreamy eyed? I’m pretty sure they haven’t and if a boy were to be staring at any part of a girl, I’m guessing it wouldn’t be her shoulders. So what’s the point in covering them up? Teachers can’t even give me a reason as to why we have this dress code, so why enforce it without reason too?
There are good dress codes such as the length of hemlines and girls’ low cut tops, these can be suggestive and distracting in a school filled with hormone-charged boys, but shoulders? Really? Shoulders are the least of our worries, yet this dress code is strictly enforced. There are many more important things to worry about then the width of shoulder straps.
The point is, some faculty members are technocrats and bother with little details, this will get us nowhere. The width of a girls shoulder strap is not going to change the quality of the education or be a distraction in class, it’s not going to change anything.
