Police Still Searching for Shooting Suspect
A suspect is on the loose in connection to a shooting that killed one junior high student and injured another. According to the Wichita Falls Police Department, it happened just after 3p.m. Friday.
WFPD said the shooting took place on the 5200 block of Kingston Drive and involved two McNeil Middle School students, 13-year-old Lauren Landavazo and 13-year-old Makayla Smith. Both girls were rushed to the hospital, but Landavazo died from her injuries. In a press released the WFPD stated Smith was in guarded condition at United Regional.
The WFPD also explained that the shooting took place in broad daylight, so there are plenty of witnesses. In addition they have received several tips regarding the crime. Police are describing the suspect as a white male, 15-16 years-old with bushy hair, driving a Black Dodge Pickup with silver running boards.
In a separate statement the WFPD said even though many people on social media sites have said this crime was committed due to the girls’ race and friendship, there has been no evidence at this time in the investigation that would indicate this to be true. In addition they want the community to know that all accurate information will be coming directly from the WFPD during the investigation.
So, if you have any information about this crime, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at (940) 322-9888. A reward was initially set at $2,500. However, according to their Facebook page, there have been donations from the public that are willing to match that reward twice, putting the reward at $8,500.
Word is spreading over social media that students in the Wichita Falls ISD are planning to wear purple to school on Tuesday in honor of Landavazo. Flowers have also been placed at the crime scene in her honor.
On Friday night Michael Kuhrt, the WFISD Superintendent released a statement explaining that the district is coordinating efforts to provide grief counseling for students. It also states that WFISD’s thoughts and prayers are going out to all involved in this tragic accident. To see the entire statement, click here.
