Senior Send-Off will be on Tuesday at the MPEC. All seniors from all three high schools are invited to attend an informational event on life skills and life after high school. There will be approximately 11 sessions such as “College Life- what can I expect?,” “Who needs a budget?” and “Gizmos Galore.”
“It is a community effort and takes months and months of preparations,” College and Career Facilitator Lesa Burleson said. “The community gets to see the students behave like adults,” Burleson said. “It is a thank you and acknowledging that they are graduating. It is just a special day.”
Though the college readiness counselors are intent on the program, it has left AP teachers preparing seniors for their tests disgruntled. With AP tests coming up real soon and this event taking students out of class for a whole day, they say it puts students behind.
“I’d rather have the students in class, but if it is for something that will be beneficial to them, then that is okay,” AP teacher Larry Kramer. “Overall, I’d rather have them in the class.”
Most students are looking at this event as being a way to get out of school for a day, however many former seniors found it to be very beneficial.
“I saw it as a way to get out of school for a day, but afterwards I was really glad I went,” ’09 graduate Holly Allsup said.”I learned a lot and it has helped me in college.”
All students will be able to have breakfast when they arrive and pizza as they leave. The event should end around approximately 1 p.m. “It is not mandatory, but is highly recommended. Students who choose not to attend will stay in the student center,” Burleson said. “Each student will get a name tag as they enter on the buses, that is how we will check attendance.”
