Tryouts for different organizations for the two new schools have started up. The drill and cheer teams have had their tryouts and color guard’s is coming up in a couple weeks.
Color guard directors Jessica Studer and Lauren Fields are holding the tryouts May 13-16 for both Memorial and Legacy color guards so the process can run smoother rather than have two separate tryouts.
The tryout process has been unique this year because of schools merging, but it hasn’t really affected the teams trying out for each school. Legacy drill team coach Brinlee Yates said her weeklong tryout process began with three days of learning routines, a mock trial on Thursday and then tryouts were on that Friday.
“It went really well, we had over 20 girls tryout and 16 make it, eight for both schools so that’s super exciting,” Yates said. “I thought that they went smoothly. I was able to exhale after it was all done and no more eye twitching.”
Yates emphasized the level of excellence she looked for in her teams during tryouts.
“Just because I want a big number doesn’t mean I’m going to sacrifice the quality of my team just to have a mass amount of girls on the field,” Yates said.
No matter how the process plays out or how many people try out, most coaches want the same thing.
“We don’t expect you to be perfect after only three days so whoever meets that standard, that can get some work learned, they’re teachable, they have a positive attitude,” Studer said. “They’re going to make it.”
Both Yates and Studer have high expectations for their teams this next school year and want to find new ways to get the community involved in what they do.
“My goals for this next year are one to obviously grow the school to build pride and create new traditions and also establish this team of excellence in all of the qualities it take to be a Legacy Royal or Memorial Sapphire, as well as just embodying the pride that it is to be at Legacy High School or Memorial High School,” Yates said.
