In a corner of Taco Bell, most people wouldn’t expect to find a group of eleventh graders working on homework, but if you happen to show up on Thursdays, that’s just what you’ll see. Math models teachers Cheryl Wuthrich and Jane Ramirez have come up with a new way to tutor students outside of school using a popular place to eat. Every Thursday at Taco Bell students show up for extra help on homework and to get assignments finished early.
“We get a chance to get to know our students better,” Wuthrich said. “They show up in comfortable clothes and are more relaxed and ready to learn.”
Everyone at one time or another has sat at home staring at a homework problem and had no idea how to do it, but that problem is solved for this study group because they are surrounded with teachers who have the extra time to spend walking over each problem with them.
“Sometimes if you don’t understand the problem, Coach Wuthrich will act it out for you,” junior Hope Alvarez said.
The tutorials are not just helping students out grade wise, they’re bringing students closer to their teachers.
“They care so much about you,” junior Ashlynn Giles said. “I’ve never had a teacher care so much.”
For students who never really understood math, the tutorials are helping them over come their specific obstacles.
“I’ve struggled to understand math since before I can remember, and to have a teacher who cares so much about you and is willing to take time out of their day to tutor us is amazing.” Giles said. These tutorials are also not only helping students pass their weekly math tests, but also preparing them for more important, standardized tests in high school.
“When I was taking my PSAT, I noticed that they were helping,” Alvarez said.
For this creative and different way of teaching, Ramirez and Wuthrich only had one thing to say.
“Taco Bell’s slogan is think outside the bun, and this is our way of thinking outside the bun,” Wuthrich said.
