Most campaigns leave a bad taste in people’s mouth’s, but not all elections are dirty.
This year’s Freshman Class Election is nothing compared to the national election where witty Twitter posts increase advertising revenue and candidates trash-talk each other. Instead, freshman candidates promoted themselves on Facebook and on posters that they hung around the school.
Elections were held on Oct. 12th. Karla Gonzalez and Leah Slade (Co-Reporters), Alex Zeizinger (Treasurer), Imran Kurani (Secretary), Nicole Linn (Vice-President) and Paige Hollingsworth (President) put a lot of effort into making their positions as class officers.
Most of the officers did not expect to win.
“I wanted to be treasurer, so when I found out I was President, I was really surprised and excited,” Hollingsworth said.
Linn says that the officers’ hope for this year is to improve the freshman spirit.
“At pep rallies the freshman just sit. It makes me really mad,” Linn said.
These tasks are not easy. Kurani said that the ability to keep deadlines, show responsibility, and make an impact on Rider are at the heart of their goals.
Not only are the officers busy trying to improve the school and its student body, but they also help out with important school events. Currently, they are planning to help decorate the school for Rider/Old High week.
“Decorating is one of the things I’m so excited for,” Hollingsworth said.
Each of the officers is also involved in numerous activities. For example, Kurani is involved in Men’s Choir, basketball, theater, and newspaper. Linn is part of choir, student council, basketball, and Spanish Club.
The amount of time the officers freely volunteer often goes unnoticed. They spend their time to make Rider and its students the best it can be. They are the face of their class, and they are what the class of 2016 will remember thirty years from now at a class reunion.
